Samsung had a great 2010, producing a series of laptop. 2011 is turning out to be equally successful and, as we approach the year’s halfway point, Samsung has released the 900X3. Boasting a gorgeous design and excellent power, courtesy of an Intel Sandy Bridge Core i5 processor, portability is also extremely impressive. The only blemish on the copy book is a slightly spongy keyboard, otherwise this makes a compelling choice for anyone after a highly powerful and portable machine.
The samsung looks absolutely fantastic. A brushed-aliminium finish gives the laptop a truly high-end look and feel, and although it does attract fingerprints, dust and dirt don’t stick to the surface. This is also one of the sleekest laptop we’ve seen in quite sometime. The laptop measures onli 19mm at its thickest point, making it easy to slip into a bag or case, while each side of the chassis features an attractive curve.
A material called Duralumin has been employed in building the laptop. According to Samsung this material, used in the manufacture of military aircraft, is twice as strong as standard aluminium. Just as well as the metal feels surprisingly flimsy, with the lid particular banding under minor pressure. We can only hope that this is an international design feature which enables the laptop to absorb pressure.
Down to either side of laptop, the Samsung port are hidden behind fold down panels. USB 3.0 included for fast data transfer between devices, and you can even charge peripherials from the USB port when the laptop is off, thanks to Sleep & Charge technology. A mini-HDMI port makes connecting the laptop to an HDTV easy, and thete’s also mini-Gigabit Ethernet port included.
The 13.3 screen is very bright, crisp and clear and features a 1366 x 768 picxel resolution. Color reproduction is especially vibrant and we were impressed by how good movies and photos looked. The laptop doesn’t feature a shini screen finish, meaning that irritating reflections aren’t problem in bright light. The laptop is also easy to view from wide angles.
We mentioned above that the keyboard isn’t as good as we had hoped. It doesn’t have time same premium feel of the rest of the machine, thanks to an overly spongy action. Those with a light typing action won’t find this problem, but your average typist will miss a concise, sharp travel.
Powering the laptop is an Intel Core i5 Sandy Bridge chip, accompanied by 4096MB of memory. This comes from Intel’s latest line of processors and proved exceptionally powerful in testing. Unless your performance requirements are of the very high levels, you’ll never use half the power the processor has to offer.
